Care Guide
Gold Filled
14k and 18k Gold Filled is a thick layer of gold which is mechanically bonded to a base metal like brass or silver. These pieces are ideal for daily wear. Gold filled jewellery has 100x more gold alloy than gold plated jewellery and because the layer of gold is so much thicker, it will last longer and withstand wear & tear over gold plated. Not to be confused with solid gold, gold filled jewellery still requires care to prolong the longevity of the gold layer. Avoid harsh chemicals such as hand sanitiser, perfume, chlorine, cleaning chemicals etc. as these chemicals can cause damage. Gold filled jewellery can be worn in the shower and sea.
We recommend you gently clean your piece under warm water using a soft tooth brush or cotton tip. Do not rub aggressively with a jewellery cleaning cloth as this can cause damage.
Vermeil
Our 18k Yellow Gold Vermeil and Rose Gold Vermeil pieces are 3 micron plated. This means each piece has a base of solid 925 Sterling Silver and is then layered three times with 18k Yellow Gold/Rose Gold plating. Each piece is then sealed with a protective e-coating to ensure the plating lasts for as long as possible, with proper care. Our Vermeil pieces are nickel free & hypoallergenic. To ensure longevity, please remove your vermeil jewellery before swimming, showering, sweating & put on AFTER applying perfume and moisturisers.
We recommend using a jewellery polishing cloth to gently polish the surfaces of your jewellery. Do not rub aggressively as this may cause scratching or damage to your piece.
Sterling Silver
Our solid 925 Sterling Silver pieces are hypoallergenic, do not contain nickel and thus are very gentle on sensitive ears. Some people are unfortunately allergic to silver and have skin reactions when in contact with silver. We do not take responsibility for any allergic reactions people may have to silver. Sterling silver, like other precious metal alloys can oxidise over time. If you treat your silver well and clean it often, you will be rewarded with very long lasting pieces! Do not wear silver jewellery in chlorinated water or around household chemicals.
We recommend you polish your silver jewellery often with a polishing cloth. You can also clean your silver pieces using a mild soap and water solution. You can also rub with a silver cloth or a cleaner designed specifically for silver. Ensure your silver jewellery is not exposed to air or light during storage as this can cause it to tarnish and oxidise.
Packaging and Storage
At Sahara Jewellery we are passionate about environmental conservation and sustainability, therefore to reduce wastage we provide packaging based on the size of your order. We also only use recycled and biodegradable packaging to reduce our carbon footprint. If you require extra boxes or pouches for gifting purposes, please write a note at checkout or email info@saharajewellery.com.au stating your order details.
We highly recommend you keep your piece in the packaging provided when not in use, and store in a cool, dark place away from sunlight, heat and moisture. We recommend gently polishing your jewellery using a jewellery polishing cloth to keep your piece shiny and to prevent tarnishing.
Do not store pieces together as they can tangle and scratch. We also highly recommend you store your different metals (i.e. gold and rose gold) separately as the different metals can react and change appearance.
Your skin, natural oils and pH
Sometimes the chemistry of your body can react with your jewellery (especially plated jewellery). This is due to some people having lower pH (more acidic) sweat and skin oils than others. The pH of your skin can, in some cases, discolour or oxidise your jewellery. Sahara Jewellery is not responsible for any returns in this case.
Wear and tear
To ensure your pieces stay as shiny as possible, for as long as possible, we recommend you remove your jewellery before:
- Sweating
- Swimming in chlorinated or sea water (non-chemical water is fine for gold filled)
- Cleaning
- Showering
- Sleeping
- Exercising (delicate jewellery can break if pulled)
- Spraying perfume
- Applying oils
- Applying moisturizer
- Applying makeup and other cosmetics
Any damage caused to your jewellery as a result of wear & tear is not covered under our 12 month warranty. Sahara Jewellery is not responsible for any returns or exchanges as a result of improper care.
